The Stewart Buchanan Memorial Fund is available only to children with special needs in Western North Carolina. Payment is considered for medically necessary adaptive items for mobility and communications that are not covered by insurance. About Stewart
The Stewart Buchanan Memorial Fund was established in 1995 by Tammy Buchanan and her family. This fund, held by CarePartners Foundation, is used to provide money for equipment for children with special needs.
Tammy Buchanan’s son, Stewart, was diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy at nine months of age, and in his early years was totally dependent on others for all his needs. As he grew older and began receiving therapy at CarePartners Rehabilitation Hospital, his therapists saw that he had enough head control to operate specially adapted equipment with his head. The use of adaptive equipment made a tremendous difference in Stewart’s life, as he learned to control an electric wheelchair, use a touch talker communication system, and play with specially designed toys. Adaptive equipment helped Stewart move from dependence to independence.
At age eleven, Stewart was re-diagnosed with a rare, fatal disorder called Hallervorden-Spatz Syndrome. This disease led to Stewart’s death at age seventeen.
Throughout his life, Stewart’s family was able to pay for most of his equipment through private insurance. But along their journey they met many other families who earned too much to qualify for public assistance, yet could not afford private insurance. Keeping in mind the needs of others, and to honor Stewart’s memory, his family decided to establish a fund that would help other children with special needs obtain the equipment they need.
Since its inception in 1995, the Stewart Buchanan Memorial Fund has provided many children with equipment used for mobility, communication, and other needs. When other resources have been exhausted, CarePartners Foundation can step in to pay for these items that make such a difference.
